Arenz continues MSA hot streak at Angell Park

Travis Arenz of Sheboygan has been setting a torrid pace in Midwest Sprint Car Association competition during the vast majority of the 2019 season and his performance in the MSA’s second of three scheduled stops of the year at the Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis. showed that he has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon.

Benefitting from a favorable invert draw to receive an outside front row starting spot in the 25-lap MSA headliner, Arenz led flag to flag to win for the third time in the last four MSA events and third time overall at the historic speed plant.

On the drop of the green flag, Arenz powered around polesitter Anthony Knierim of Franksville to lead the opening lap along the outside groove around the well-manicured multi-groove third-mile dirt oval.

As Arenz darted out to a healthy lead in the early going, defending Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car champion Justin Miller of Plymouth, moved in from the third starting spot to pressure Knierim for second. The two drivers dueled side by side for the runner-up spot until the first caution of the race appeared on lap 4 when Adam Miller of Plymouth spun in turn two.

Following the restart, 2011 MSA champion Ben Schmidt of Howards Grove made his presence felt as he bolted into fourth on lap 5. Two laps later, Schmidt powered around Justin Miller to seize third in turn two on lap 7 before working past Knierim into second on lap 11.

On lap 12, Arenz caught the back of the field and was just beginning to slice his way through the slower traffic when the second yellow flag of the event appeared as rookie Blake Wondra of Fond du Lac stopped in turn four.

Arenz, who won the first MSA event of the year at Angell Park on June 2, again built up a comfortable cushion on the restart before catching a large group of slower cars on lap 19, which allowed Schmidt to close the gap considerably.

Schmidt moved into within three car lengths of Arenz on lap 22. However, Arenz skillfully worked his way through lapped traffic to shield himself from Schmidt’s late charge and secure his fifth career MSA A-main victory and series-leading fourth MSA main event win of the 2019 season.

Schmidt placed second, Justin Miller finished third, Knierim held on to place fourth and Waupun's Will Gerrits, who started 10th, rounded out the top five.

The MSA competitors will return to action in support of the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Start Circuit of Champions-Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association Challenge event scheduled Thursday, July 25 at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis.

Spectator gates are set to open at 4:30 with hot laps scheduled for 5:30 with All Star-IRA qualifying and racing to follow.
